Dennis Fast > BOBCAT. The bobcat is very versatile in its choice of habitats and food. Although retiring by nature, bobcats are also known for occasional bold appearances in the presence of humans.
Dennis Fast > MOUNTAIN LION LOOKOUT High vantage points are a favourite of the mountain lion. His remarkable vision will detect movement from great distances. On his lofty perch unwary prey might not even notice him till he is on their back.
Dennis Fast > LYNX PORTRAIT The less marked face and longer ear tufts help to separate the lynx from the bobcat. The lynx also has inordinately large feet to help it walk on snow. Both animals somewhat resemble the common house cat, but their power is considerably greater.
Dennis Fast > GRAY WOLF STALK. The combination of a stalking pose and fresh snow falling lend an air of realism to this photo even in a captive situation. You don't really want to be the object of that stalk; but I have been followed by wild wolves without being threatened by them. They are masters at keeping out of site while keeping you in view at all times.
Dennis Fast > ON THE RUN The gray wolf possesses an easy lope that can carry him tirelessly for many miles. Once locked on his prey, he will simply wear it down into submission.
Dennis Fast > BOBCAT Although the bobcat and lynx closely resemble each other, the bobcat is more adaptable to a variety of habitats. The lynx prefers the deeper north woods while bobcats can be found in desert and marshy areas just as readily.
Dennis Fast > ROARING BARBARY LION. The magnificent Barbary lion is extinct in the wild. Formerly roaming the deserts and hills of Tunisia and Morocco, less than 400 Barbary lions still exist in captivity. Most of them are in Africa, believed to be descended from the collection once held by the King of Morocco, but a few exist on game farms and zoos of North America. The Barbary lion is distinguished from regular African lions by its darker and fuller mane which also extends half way down its back and across its belly. It was a special privilege to photograph this extremely rare animal at Animals of Montana.
Dennis Fast > GRIZZLY BEAR I take a lot of out of focus pictures but usually not deliberately! When I was focusing my lens for this shot, however, I felt that blurring the main subject added an aura of mystery to the scene. The focus shifts to the falling snow while the details are left to the imagination.
Dennis Fast > THE STARE. I seldom leave large unfocused areas near the foreground of my photographs, but I made an exception here. I think the blurry wolf in the front adds a slightly sinister element to the stare down. Coupled with the low point of view, it also makes me feel as if I am the wolf returning the stare.
