Dennis Fast > STOP LOOKING AT ME LIKE THAT! This juvenile mountain lion and his buddy loved chasing each other in the snow. He may look a little cross here but he was actually having a great time. It was a real treat to be so close that I could make this photo with a wide-angle lens.
Dennis Fast > BOREAL OWL IN SPRUCE TREE The Boreal Owl is one of Canada's most elusive and sought after owls. Birders and photographers sometimes travel great distances for an opportunity to see and to photograph these tiny raptors. As a result, I consider myself most fortunate in having had the occasion to photograph this bird three times in my own back yard! This bird was revealed to me by screaming Blue Jays. After walking around the tree three times staring carefully into the higher branches near the trunk of the tree where they prefer to hide, I suddenly realized it was right in front of me at eye level!
Dennis Fast > MALE POLAR BEARS RESTING AFTER A WRESTLING MATCH. In October, polar bears wrestle for mating status that will occur much later in the dark cold of an Arctic night. After a "friendly" pushing, slapping and biting match that may last for more than an hour, the two combatants lie down for a well-deserved nap.
Dennis Fast > LIGHTNING LANDSCAPE. Lightning is one of my favorite subjects on the prairies where I live, but I proceed with caution! The power of the storm is enhanced by the strong bolt of lightning, echoed in the distance by another, and by the relatively peaceful scene below that contrasts with the dynamic clouds.
Dennis Fast > POLAR BEAR RELAXING IN FIREWEED. What could be more relaxed than a polar bear in a bed of "roses". The most amazing thing about it all was that he completely disappeared when he lay down amidst flowers that barely reached my thigh.
Dennis Fast > THE CHASE. These two mountain lion cubs were barely 6 months old so they still played like kittens. Chasing each other at top speed through the snow, it was difficult to predict which way they would turn next. I finally caught the moment as they charged toward me.
Dennis Fast > BARBARY LION PORTRAIT. The Barbary lion has a remarkably serene but craggy face. His indifferent stare seems to be fixed more on the back of his mind then on what is going on before him. Through it all, though, he never forgets his regal ancestry.
